I have visited Koh Samui several times so was intrigued to read a novel based on the stunning Thai island. It was a fun book to read for sure. The author is British so his sense of humour was spot on for me. It is a murder mystery which has a nice twist at the end. I’m excited to read more from this author.

Loved this book. Lots of interesting characters who I hope reappear in a follow up novel. Style reminiscent of the Australian write Robert Barrett. Eccentric characters, implausible plot and a whole lot of entertainment !

Great story about a hapless but not hopeless lawyer with a conscience, the intrigues and failings of living and working on a tourist island and all that goes on underneath the surface there. Well written, a real page turner and lots of fun!

BUY THIS BOOK: Michael Peart’s first novel The Samui Conspiracy is a BIG winner! A jolly romp of a tale jam packed with all the sparkling ingredients of a sensational thriller. Our hero, ex UK and Hong Kong lawyer Ben McCann  is winding down his law practice in Koh Samui when the beautiful Alex Wattana enters into his life. There follows sex, murder, intrigue, shady characters and Ben’s former Hong Kong partner Dylan, now sober and pupilling for top Hong Kong QC Richard Yap as they both try to save Ben’s Geordie junior lawyer Paul Catermole from taking the rap. Michael you are a gift. Your book lightened up this busy lawyer’s Christmas. Loved the short punchy paragraphs. Grisham will be looking over his shoulder! I can’t wait for the follow up.

A fun and witty thriller, The Fanling Conspiracy is the first in the Conspiracy Series by Michael Peart, appropriately dubbed “A light-hearted legal thriller.”

Roberts McCann, the firm Ben McCann started five years ago with his best friend, Dylan Roberts, is financially struggling and needs an influx of money. It looks as though Ben’s prayers are answered when a new client, representing a local Hong Kong clan, retains the firm to get back the Fanling temple from the corrupt government, but things quickly turn into a nightmare when the trial judge is stabbed to death and Tyler Scott, a solicitor with Ben’s firm, is charged with the judge’s murder. With Tyler’s future on the line, Ben scrambles to find the truth, putting his own life in jeopardy…

Peart gives readers an irreverent look at the challenges of practicing law in Hong Kong. Although a legal thriller, his style of writing is entertaining and humorous without being overly prone to “legalese.” The characters of Ben and Dylan are particularly engaging, despite their many flaws. Although there are some grammatical and punctuation challenges, the book has a solid plot and provides plenty of twists to keep things interesting throughout.

Overall, The Fanling Conspiracy is a great start to what promises to be an entertaining series.

The Samui Conspiracy (Conspiracy Series Book 2) by Michael Peart

The Samui Conspiracy by Michael Peart is the entertaining sequel to the breezy legal thriller, The Fanling Conspiracy, and the last installment in the series.

Solicitor Ben McCann moved to Koh Samui, a tropical island off the coast of Thailand, five years ago and has just merged his modest firm with a large Bangkok law firm. Ben is summarily told that their newest client, BAS Petroleum, intends to start drilling for oil in nearby Koh Tao and he’s tasked with persuading Alex Wattana, the President of the Thailand Oil Commission, to grant BAS the licence to drill. Ben immediately hits it off with the beautiful Alex but before she can announce her decision, Alex is found dead with Ben’s associate, Paul, charged with her murder…

Peart’s thriller is laced with his own unique brand of humor, which makes this series on the lighter edge of legal thrillers, but always entertaining. His fifty-two-year-old protagonist, Ben, lives an unapologetically jaded lifestyle yet has an air of vulnerability about him that’s endearing. Despite a few grammatical and punctuation issues, the novel matches its predecessor with a well-constructed plot and frequent twists, while bar girls with loose morals and a colorful cast of characters add spice to an already exotic setting.

Thanks to liberal doses of humor and solid writing, The Samui Conspiracy is a consistently entertaining thriller that will appeal to a wide audience.
